Harrison Ford: ‘I’m the schmuck that landed on the taxiway’. What means “schmuck”?

Harrison Ford called himself a “schmuck” when he mistakenly landed on the taxyway at John Wayne Airport in California a few months back. As seen in the video, he flew over a Boeing 747 which was holding short of the runway in use.

Many German speakers would automatically assume, that the word “schmuck” would mean “jewelry”. However this is not correct and by the way would make little sense in the given context above. This type of mix up  by learners is defined as “false friends” where words which are often almost identically written have an entirely different meaning. for example “brav” and “brave”..

A “schmuck” is someone who is stupid.
